How do hybrid cars work? Hybrid cars still use gasoline on Clinton streets, but not nearly as much. There are two kinds of hybrid: those that use regenerative braking to charge their batteries, and those that are recharged by being plugged in. While regenerative braking hybrids doesn’t require any change in your driving and fueling habits, plug-in hybrids offer better fuel economy. In the Toyota and EV lineup, the regenerative braking models are named Hybrid while the plug-in hybrids are called Prime.
EVs don’t require gasoline or oil changes because they don’t use a traditional motor. Instead they’re powered by a large battery that gets recharged by plugging it in. You can do a very slow recharge just by plugging your vehicle into a socket in your garage. The better option involves having a home charging unit installed, and you can also use public charging stations, which are becoming more and more common.
