How Does Toyota Pre-Collision System Work?

Toyotas showing how pre-collision system works

Toyota Safety Sense™.

The Toyota Pre-Collision System is part of a bundle of features called Toyota Safety Sense™.: These revolutionary features have set the standard for safety while operating vehicles. This bundle includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, and the Pre-Collision System With Pedestrian Detection. Each of these innovative features is designed to keep you, your passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers safe while offering you peace of mind. The features work together to help you navigate Madison streets confidently, especially when there is inclement weather. Toyota Safety Sense™ is beginning to come standard on new models.

What is the Purpose of the Pre-Collision System With Pedestrian Detection?

The Pre-Collision System With Pedestrian Detection is able to locate a preceding car or pedestrian. An interesting aspect of this system is that it does give audio and visual cues, but it also actively assists you by applying the brake if it appears the driver is not going to slow down or stop. It is also able to deploy a full force stop if it detects that a collision is imminent. The advanced sensor capability of the system with pedestrian detection allows the sensor to detect pedestrians if you are turning right or left. This amazing technology prevents accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists getting injured when they were in the car’s blindspot. This allows for unprecedented protection for cyclists and pedestrians in Old Saybrook and Clinton.

How Does the Pre-Collision System With Pedestrian Detection Operate?

The equipment and technology that operates the Pre-Collision System is technology at its finest. Here is a basic outline of the way the system works:

  • The model of Toyota that comes equipped with the Pre-Collision System has a front-facing camera and lasers installed into the front grille.
  • The system utilizes these components to measure the size of what is in front of you, and the distance from your front bumper to the object in front of your car.
  • The system takes your car’s speed into account and factors that number into the likelihood of a collision.
  • If the system determines that a collision is a possibility, it will alert you with an audio-visual alert. You should apply your brakes.
  • If you do not apply your brakes after the signal, the Pre-Collision System might automatically apply the brakes.
  • Vehicles with Pedestrian Detection have an additional grille-mounted system that uses millimeter-wave radar to check your surroundings for smaller objects, which the Pre-Collision System might not detect.
  • By examining the size, shape, and motion of this smaller object, PD can identify vulnerable people and apply the brakes as necessary.
